Bone is continuously swapping out old bone for new bone. This regeneration process slows with age which causes the bone to become think and weak (Udell, 2017). Osteoporosis can be diagnosed with a BMD, a test that measures bone mineral density. BMD’s usually measure areas such as the spine, hip, and femur. The most efficient BMD presently is the duel-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA or DEXA). The DXA resembles an x-ray, but it involves considerably less radiation. The results of the DXA are calculated using a T-score, which is based on the bone mineral density of those you are young and healthy (Udell, 2017). Treating osteoporosis generally comes down to prevention or managing at this point in time since there is no cure for the disease. Ways to prevent osteoporosis are to maintain a healthy diet that has plenty of calcium and vitamin D, weight-bearing physical activity, and to abstain from drinking or smoking.
