Nurses are ideally suited in eliminating health disparities because of the profession itself: using holistic approach, most trusted healthcare professionals, have history of working with marginalized groups, ability to partner with communities and serve as advocates, and longstanding practice and research contribution in working with most vulnerable communities (Peragallo, n.d.). Nurses are the primary healthcare providers for disparities populations so they should not compare the patients in terms of socioeconomic status, skin color, religion and ethnicity. Nurses usually give fair treatments to all people as long as they are called patient and needs help.
According to The National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice (NACNEP) (2013), a diverse nursing workforce is essential for progress towards health equality. The advanced practice registered nurse workforces, those with masters or doctoral degree, have expanded and diverse, are independent care providers who often locate in underserved and minority communities. To change the culture of healthcare, there is an effort to strengthen underrepresented minority in leadership roles in health professionals.
