The author was raised in a Indian reservation camp and struggled financially compared to people living outside the reservation. However, the author slowly started to understand the words on a book and everything else around him that had words on it. He taught himself by looking at a Superman comic book . He was looking at all the illustrations on every page and knew that the words were supposed to correspond to the picture. The author also had a dad that loved books and had a filled bookshelf where he could read. He eventually completely understood how to read and write and looked around him and found out he was special. According to the author “he reads Grapes of Wrath in kindergarten when other children are struggling through Dick and Jane.”. He refused to fail and read into the night until he could keep his eyes open and not read anymore. He read everywhere in the car, shopping malls, baseball games and basketball games. He had a variety of sources to read because his father would always bring books from the pawnshop. He also read from the newspaper every article he could see and junk mail.
