Nigeria is often referred to as the "Giant of Africa", owing to its large population and economy. But it is estimated that a sea level rise of just 200 mm could make 740,000 people in Nigeria homeless. What’s worse, according to the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), the trend of global warming and sea level rise is irreversible in this century. Sea level rise is usually attributed to global warming by thermal expansion of the water in the oceans and by melting of ice sheets …show more content…
First, greenhouse gas emissions are blamed for heating up the atmosphere. The greenhouse effect is the process by which absorption and emission of infrared radiation by gases in a planet's atmosphere warm its lower atmosphere and surface. And the major greenhouse gases are water vapor, which causes about 36–70%; carbon dioxide (CO2), which causes 9–26% of the greenhouse effect; methane (CH4), which causes 4–9%; and ozone (O3), which causes 3–7%. Human activities, like burning a large amount of fossil fuel and calcining limestone for clinker production, a chemical process which releases CO2, since the Industrial Revolution have increased the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, leading to increased radiative forcing from CO2, methane, tropospheric ozone, CFCs and nitrous oxide. Many scientists believe that the intensification of the greenhouse effect caused by large emissions of greenhouse gases is the basic cause of global …show more content…
According to the United Nations’ latest estimation, the world's population has reached 7.5 billion. The carbon dioxide emitted by so many people every day is also a source of it. Besides, the automobile exhaust, the diminishing waters in the surface and the reduced precipitation which decrease the amount of dissolved carbon dioxide are also the reasons of global warming.
The Global Warming has two sides of effect to the world's creature. First, the Global Warming means there is more carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. Some plants can grow faster and stronger than before. This is its good effect. But on the other hand the global Warming will bring us more disasters than fortune. Because of the more and more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the earth's temperature is rising day by day.
The high temperature will cause many serious problems. What is more serious is its severe weather, such as extreme high temperatures, extreme low temperatures, extreme precipitation, extreme wind speeds, etc., which will lead to frequent natural disasters such as floods and droughts, food production cuts, species extinctions and air pollution. These disasters will follow the climate change one after
