Causes Of Gatsby's Downfall

Jay Gatsby’s downfall is important in the story because of all of the false claims, lies, and inability to keep himself secret. All the things Gatsby has failed to do has led to his painful Downfall. Also, his relationship fantasy’s borders kept him off of Daisy. All Gatsby could have done is to be a little more covert and confident, then maybe he could have survived a little longer.

Gatsby’s dream was to win the heart of Daisy, but in reality, his own life kept him from doing so. Jay Gatsby was a mysterious man, but with all those things he couldn't reveal, it was a tall barrier against his fantasy with Daisy. Gatsby just wanted a happy life, but he couldn’t get what he wanted. For example, Gatsby made a mistake of telling Tom to invite Daisy to tea, but otherwise he should have asked Daisy directly, maybe that would’ve upped his chances, but he didn’t take such an opportunity to do so. In other words, Gatsby’s inability to keep his mouth shut made everything later on in the story happen, such as his small trips and falls that led to a large hole he can’t get out of. First, his failure of keeping himself secret exposed him to Nick, but Nick knew that Gatsby’s lies and false claims were all too good to be true. For example, when Gatsby was in the car with Nick, he told things like going into the army and achieving many medals and going to an expensive private college, but Nick knew that those things were too crammed together to be true. Also, Gatsby’s awkwardness around Meyer Wolfshiem exposed more about Gatsby, which was a dangerous move with Nick around.
