BREAST CANCER “We don’t know how strong we are until being strong is the only choice we have” (Breast Cancer Awareness). This paper will be about what cancer is, survival rates, chemotherapy (what it is, how it helps), radiation therapy, breast cancer rates in African American Women, the types of tumors and the difference between them, and information from women with personal experience with this specific type of cancer. Cancer begins when cells in a part of the body start to grow out pf control. The body is made of trillions of cells. Cancer cell growth is different from normal cell growth. Some people with certain types of cancer get both treatments. But radiation that comes from the outside of the body is called external beam, which is like an x-ray. This is painless and only takes a few minutes. Radiation that can be inserted in the body is called internal radiation therapy. If you are having internal radiation therapy, this allows doctors to give large doses of radiation to the cancer cells. Most radiation treatments are given 5 days a week for 1 to ten weeks, depending on the size and type of cancer, where the cancer is located, how good your health is, and what other treatments you are getting. Melanoma can be prevented by protecting yourself from damaging sun rays. One of the leading causes of lung cancer is smoking (Massari 25-26). The damage that is done to the lungs will stay with that person forever. So if you smoke for years on end, then you will have a greater chance of having lung cancer (Massari 18). You should always tell your doctor about your pain, because only you know how much pain you are in. If you wait until your pain is really bad, then it will be harder to control it. Your health care team needs to know: when did your pain start? How often do you have it? Where does it hurt? How strong is your pain? What does it feel like? Is it sharp, dull, throbbing, steady, burning, etc? And how much relief do you get from your pain medicine? It is important to know that cancer pain can almost always be relieved.
