Universities have done many things to hide it from the general public when someone is sexually assaulted on their campus. One reason for this is because many of the perpetrators are college athletes. A college athlete committing sexual assault can damage the school’s reputation, so they try to hide it. Universities can hide it when their players commit campus rape because they are often responsible for the investigation. Campus rape is unacceptable and athletes committing these heinous acts should be held responsible; both the University and police departments need to do a better job of prosecuting campus rape. …show more content…
Often universities hold their trials with a panel of professors and other administrators, and they “aren't properly trained, they tend to ask inappropriate [questions] and blame the victims”(Tempesta). Elly, who was allegedly sexually assaulted by an athlete at the University of Arkansas, was on trial and a panel member asked if her medical record was correct (Tempesta). Panel members questioned the extent of her bruising and why Elly didn't have bruises during the disciplinary hearing. According to Title IX, the university is only required to take action if the incident is reported on campus. This portion of the case relates best to the deontological theory simply because the university focused on their duties, even though it was obviously not in the best interest of the victim for them to do so. With this being said, it is possible that the actions of the university could be found ethical by the deontological theory. However, under the provisions of the deontological theory, the coaches and school officials involved should have felt an intrinsic obligation to meet the needs of the victim after the incident occurred. Instead, the university failed to do as much as return a phone call to the victim’s family.…

The subject of the case is "A rape on Campus", an article written by Sabrina Rubin Erdely in Rolling Stones magazine. Erdely is a writer, journalist and editor at Rolling Stones. The article lacked integrity and substantial evidence as the victim wasn't questioned. I'm writing about this case because it demonstrates how a journalist's writing can be falsified if not backed up with proof. Also, it's ironic that the story managed to slipped by the professionals, get published, and read almost three million times before being doubted.…

In some cases, the victims were made to feel as if it was their own fault. In other cases, there was little to no action taken at all. In one instance at Florida State University, where the victims alleged attacker was on the football team, she was told that “the football team is very powerful” as to tell her that she would never win her case or she had no case. The idea that these universities would not try and cover up these cases or infer that it was the victims fault is very much appalling. It is telling the students on these campuses they value money and the reputation of the school over the life or well-being of the students.…

Even if the victim did choose to get the police involved in his or her case, would the police be able to solve it? Would the attacker be convicted? Attorney Brandt-Young says “the accused student deserves a timely resolution, and these police investigations can literally go on for months or even years.”…

Sexual assault is continuing to be a problem on college campuses across the United States. One in five women will be sexually assaulted on a college campus each year, however only 5% of the instances will be reported (The Realities of Sexual Abuse 2009). Many students who commit a sexual assault crime are allowed to stay on campuses, in the same general area as their victim with very minimal punishments placed upon them (Kingkade 2014). Sexual assault causes extreme physical and mental harm to the victims, and colleges are doing less and less to help them. Because of colleges allowing students found guilty of sexual assault to stay on campus, victims of rape often feel unsafe going to authorities.…

Sexual assault perpetrators usually prey in populations where people are new and those who don’t quite know the ropes yet. These colleges may also not know their boundaries, people around campus, and how to hold their liquor. When intoxicated or high on drugs, it is still rape to have sex with that person because their consent is not given. Reporting such a case is challenging especially when you can’t recall exactly what happened. Audrey Logan, a student attending Occidental College in 2010 experienced something similar.…
