Al-Qa’ida attempted its first attack on the United States on 29 December 1992, targeting a few hotels in Aden, Yemen, where U.S. Marines were known to be occupying during the trek to Somalia to participate in Operation Restore Hope, (Scheuer, 2006). This attack included a series of bombings, although their objective proved to be unsuccessful. Even though a bomb was detonated at the Gold Mohur hotel, U.S. troops had already left the area. Instead, the blast killed one hotel employee, one Austrian citizen, and injured four other Austrian citizens (Synder, 2001).
