Causes From The 21st Century
Although many of the surges in Islamic Fundamentalism happened during the 19th and 20th century, Islamic fundamentalism has gained many of its members through different attributes and advantages of the 21th century. A comprehensive demographic study of more than 200 countries finds that there are 1.57 billion Muslims of all ages living in the world today, representing 23% of an estimated 2009 world population of 6.8 billion (Pew Research Center). Some of these causes are globalization, immigration, social identity and technology. All of these reason make the world a much smaller place and makes it easier for the word of Islam to spread. Islam is a growing religion and could see a spike in fundamentalism from the projected increase in members it garners in the next 20 years.
Globalization. Globalization has been internalized in Arabic as “awlaama” and refers to the spread throughout the globe of ideas, customs, institutions, and attitudes originated in one part of the world which are usually Western in origin (Barry Rubin). In Islam since the creation of the Muslim Brotherhood in the 1920s, fundamentalist have consistently traditional religion, called Sufism and have supported salafis, which is modernized reformation (Bryan S. Turner ch. 6). Globalization has turned regular religions into conflicting ideals and practices.
