Cancer is described as uncontrolled growth of the abnormal body cells. Cancer associated with altered expression of cellular genes which its normal function is to regulate proliferation and differentiation of cell. Cancer is the second major cause of death for both men and women in the United States (Copstead & Banasik, 2013). According to National Cancer Institute (2014), there are over one hundred types of cancer existing. Types of cancers are named for the organ or type of cell in which its growth started. In order diagnose cancer, many tests will be done to find out the location, and if it has spread to the surrounding cells and organs. Some tests that are performed will help to determine which treatments will be the most effective. This easy will describe the approach to cancer care, including how cancers can be diagnosis and its staging, complications following cancer, the side effects of treatment, and process to reduce the physical and psychological effects of cancer treatment.
Causes of Cancer
According to Copstead & Banasik (2013), lifestyle factors, such as diet, tobacco use, and obesity can attribute to one third of deaths due to cancer. Excessive exposure to sun and UV leading to skin cancer, radiation exposure, sexual exposure predisposing one to cervical cancer, genetic factor, and some types of infections (American Cancer Society, 2014).
