Water Pollution in Canada Water pollution is the contamination of bodies of water because pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into the water without adequate treatment to remove said pollutants. It can branch out into different areas including acid rain, erosion and sediment, groundwater contamination, and wastewater. Acid rain is rainwater in which the acidity is increased by sulphur and nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere, which are most likely caused by industrial and vehicle emissions. The chemicals combine with the water in the atmosphere to form sulphuric and nitric acids. This is when precipitation takes place and the acids become considered …show more content…
Erosion happens when soil matter is transported either by wind or water from one location to another. Naturally erosion can take place over a long period of time, however there are many human activities that speed up the process. This causes the original location to be stripped of soil and become exposed. Erosion concerning water, called fluvial sediment, happens when soil is carried away from the land into rivers systems and eventually into lakes or seas. Many of the waterways in Canada move millions of tons of sediment a year. In British Columbia the Fraser River carries approximately 20 million tons of sediment in one year. (Government of Canada) This process has the ability to transport many pollutants in the sediment particles. Scientists are able to evaluate the chemicals that are released into the environment by studying the characteristics of the sediment in streams and determining the impact they have on the environment. Some human activities that spread up the process of erosion are construction and farming practices. Construction can cause the erosion and sedimentation of water bodies; this degrades the water quality, habitat and infrastructure. Farming practices increase soil erosion and add toxic chemicals to the …show more content…
Consequently, Christians should be doubly concerned with water pollution, as we are called by God to take care of the earth in the creation mandate. Genesis 1:28 says, “And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the
