Take a moment right now to take a nice, refreshing breath. Now imagine if you weren 't able to enjoy that. Imagine the air was so thick with dust and smog and tiny, deadly particles that you can barely breathe the air around you. Richard Muller said “It’s as if every man, woman, and child were smoking 1.5 cigarettes each hour in Beijing, China.” Many people cannot even stand to be near someone when they are constantly being bombarded with second hand smoke. Imagine never having the opportunity to get away from that smoke. You, your teacher, your classmates, your little brother or sister all making it so hard for you to breathe. You try to get people to stop, but it is not their choice. Just like the poor people in Beijing, they have not had any opportunity to get away from the smog. Air pollution is what you often think about when you hear the word pollution, maybe giant towers with smoke coming out of the top of them, but there is more than that to air pollution. Smoke from chimneys, factories, vehicles, or burning of wood basically occurs due to coal burning; this releases sulfur dioxide into the air making it toxic (Rinkesh). All those smoke stacks and clouds of gas from cars are toxins being put into the air that we all breathe. Many people use chimneys or wood stoves to heat their homes. Nearly every person that attends this school will drive here every day and contribute to air pollution. When excess nitrogen comes back to earth from the atmosphere, it can harm the health of forests, soils and waterways ("Nutrients Pollution").
