Between the three different types diabetes, only 5% of people suffer from type 1. With an unknown cause, there are many effects from this disease. Ranging from short term to long term, and positive to negative effects, diabetes is a disease that one must be very disciplined to keep under control. This life-long disease still has no cure. In this paper, I will discuss the proposed cause and the many effects of type 1 diabetes.
Like many diseases that have an exact cause, type 1 diabetes is not one of those. There are many factors that play into the cause of this disease. “What is known is that your immune system — which normally fights harmful bacteria or viruses — attacks and destroys your insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.” (Mayo Clinic Staff) With the immune system destroying the insulin-producing cells, results in the body having little or no insulin. With no insulin, sugar builds up in the bloodstream rather than being released into cells. This all takes place in one’s pancreas. Instead of the immune system protecting one’s body from bacteria and viruses, in a diabetic it is destroying the cells that produce insulin for the body. Two other possible causes to type 1 are genetics and environmental factors but these two causes are still not definite. For a disease that the exact cause is still unknown, there are various effects that come with having type 1 diabetes.
