The United States has quickly started and joined military conflicts across the globe, often without truly evaluating the need or cost of the conflicts. A sad and major example of this was the justification of the invasion of Iraq. The Bush administration was adamant in its belief that Saddam Hussein was in possession …show more content…
This major blunder shows the need for a hesitation to military action, as the US can often be wrong in their reasoning. Blunders in other aspects of government can sometimes be forgiven and forgotten. War however is a cruel and bloody mistake. Hundreds of thousands of US troops have at times been stationed in Iraq or Afghanistan. They risked their lives everyday for wars that seemed to never end (Source D). Even now, decades after the starts of the war, US troops still remain. Our nation should no longer be so eager to join on these endless wars. This rush to war has been the cause to other major side effects as well. Another horrific example of this is the creation of ISIS. They likely would not have formed without the repeated invasions in the Middle East. The United States was not wanted there by the citizens, which made it easy to radicalize people against them, The US also created a power vacuum in the region after toppling the Iraqi government. This happens because americans dont ever have to see the true cost of these wars. They are not the ones who are dying in conflicts. This has even led to many americans being proud of the conflicts we are in, as if they were sporting events we had won. Many americans, for example, were proud of the US intervention in the Gulf War(source G). They could easily forget the death toll of the war because they couldn't see it. This is a horrible state for our nation to be in. War is cruel and bloody and should be avoided at all costs. It has even come to the point where our nation is involved in conflicts that the public doesn't even care to know about. One editorial cartoon effectively shows this when a soldier returns home to americans who ask what war he was in (Source F). American citizens are beginning to find pride in their military escalation in wars across the globe. This is very troubling considering the costs of war. More than 210,000 civilians have died in these conflicts They died in the Iraq and Afghan wars, which the US refuses to end. Those civilians were very real, and were more than just numbers on the news like they are portrayed on television news in the US. They were families of women
