Causes There are many reasons why people drink and drive. Most people think they are not as drunk as they really are. Alcohol makes them feel confident that they can drive extra careful without incidents occurring. Alcohol also suppresses their ability to rationalize causing them to make rash decisions. Most drink to escape their personal problems and once drunk are ashamed or afraid to call someone who could pick them up (“Drinking and Driving”). One reason drunk driving is more common in some places more than others is community design. Communities that have licensed establishments far where the people live or work increases the risk of them drinking and driving. Drunk driving is also more common in rural or suburban settings.
