For example, alcohol addiction can be a tremendous issue in a marriage. The partner can become violent along with having angry tempers. Also, they can lose their job which means a source of money income was just cut off. Which then goes back to the debt and bill problem. Lindsey Rodriguez, Clayton M. Neighbors, Raymond C. Knee discuss that “Although marriage is generally associated with decreased heavy drinking and alcohol problems, many couples develop and maintain alcohol use disorders during committed relationships and marriage” (pg 1). What they mean is that in a long committed relationship, when one has a problem they will often turn to alcohol as the solution. And with more and more problems in the relationship that occasional drink to help to fight go away from the brain turns into an addiction. Which in that case gets extremely difficult to untwine. Rodriguez, Neighbors, and Knee also state, “When one person is affected by an alcohol use disorder, it both affects and is affected by their close relationships, particularly the relationship with their partner or spouse” (pg 1). This is describing that alcohol does indeed intertwine in a marriage. That has affected the relationship and can end in the result of a divorce. Also, gambling and other addictions are a cause of marriage failures. For example, if a husband has a gambling addiction, where is he getting the money from. People who are addicted to gambling can spend and spend without thinking of the consequences because they believe that they will win. Plus, they tend not to think about what they’re doing because they love the adrenaline rush they get while gambling. Once they realize that they lost a bunch of money, all they can think about is getting more to go gamble again. Which can cause a lot of stress on the wife due to the fact that all the money for bills and necessary goods like food are gone.
