Infidelity is where one partner chooses to engage in a sexual relationship with someone other than their marriage partner, thus violating the rules and norms of the expected behavior that are supposed to be displayed in a marriage. This is a violation of moral and ethical values of a relationship and upon its discovery by the other partner, can be a cause of heartbreak and immense emotional distress which can result in the loss of sexual confidence and personal confidence. It can also cause feelings of extreme rage and jealousy in the cheated partner. Infidelity is a prominent issue in the society and if the act goes public, can cause embarrassment and have other social impacts for the person who committed the infidelity. There are many causes of infidelity with the most common one being marriage dissatisfaction. Marriage dissatisfaction can be a result of lacking commitment to maintain the relationship, social factors where one partner is unable to provide for the other partner’s emotional needs. It can also be a result of sexual discontent among partners where one partner may not be able to satisfy the other sexually. There may be other reasons such as where one partner completely falls out of love and does not show intimacy anymore or may fall in love with another person while continuing to love their current partner. It can result in divorce when one partner excessively engages in alcohol or drug use and becomes addicted (PAUL R. AMATO). This has extremely detrimental effects on that person’s health and ultimately leads him/her to dismiss their responsibilities as a partner and sometimes as a parent. This may make the partner unable to provide for the other partner’s financial or emotional needs which can create more distance between them. Substance abuse can lead to many negative consequences for the abuser such as increasing the chances of them performing a criminal act like theft, in order to gain money to feed their addiction which is a result of financial hardships that they face. It can also lead to infidelity in cases where one partner may engage in sexual activity with people for money in order to feed the addiction. It may also lead to negative psychological effects on the children as it will cause them to grow up believing that substance abuse is normal. Substance abusers are generally more susceptible to having profound mood swings where they may have an unstable behavior, where they may suddenly change their mood from being happy to angry. This also gives rise to physical violence among the members. Substance abuse may cause the abuser to distance themselves from their families as they will actively seek out other substance abusers and befriend them. This causes them to let go of their responsibilities even more
