The American Revolution also referred to as the Revolutionary War was a war fought from 1775-1783 and won by the 13 American colonies to achieve independence from Great Britain. There are various causes and effects of the American Revolution. Some of the many causes include; the Stamp Act, the Boston Massacre, and the Boston Tea Party.
One cause of the American Revolution was the Stamp Act. In March 1765, parliament passed the Stamp Act. The Stamp act was intended to raise money for the colonies. The act required the colonists to pay taxes on all printed materials, such as books, newspapers, contracts, etc. Once the colonists heard about the Stamp Act they angrily protested. They believed it they if they accepted this tax, Parliament would add even more taxes, thus removing them from their property and political rights. The colonists were fed up with British constantly establishing heavy taxes on everyday items so they decided to take matters into their hands. One night in March 1770, a group of colonists stumbled out of a local tavern and encountered British soldiers. The colonists taunted the British officers, once they realized the officers were paying them no mind they started hurling snowballs and rocks at the British soldiers guarding the Customs house. The soldiers, in turn, started firing at the crowd, killing 5 colonists. This event would, later on, be referred to as the Boston Massacre by the Patriots. Colonists used this event as an opportunity to organize the committees of correspondence. The Parliament once again backed down, the British withdrew troops from Boston and dropped most of the Townshend duties, however, they kept the taxes on the tea.
