Pollution, it’s been around for centuries. Pollution is defined as contamination of the environment as a result of human activities. Pollution is negatively affecting not only nature and wildlife, but it is also harmful to the health of humans. With that being said, what can we do as humans to not only correct our mistakes, but change the way we treat the world around us in order to preserve humanity and the ecosystem for centuries to come? The United States government has done a few things to improve the negative footprint pollution is leaving for our country, but overall, as Americans, we end up resorting back to our nasty habits, therefore, the problems remain. Noise pollution is “either excessive amount of noise or an unpleasant sound that causes temporary disruption in the natural balance.” (Rinkesh). There are six common causes of noise pollution; Industrialization, poor urban planning, social events, transportation, construction activities, and household chores. Personally, I only feel that two of those should actually be considered causes of noise pollution, industrialization and transportation. The other four may be nuisances, but they are common everyday activities that aren’t doing a significant amount of harm and they are probably not going to be changed. The way that industrialization is considered to be noise pollution is due to the excessive use of big machinery that puts off copious amounts of noise. These loud noises can actually have an effect on people’s health, specifically, the workers, they must wear ear plugs to protect the internal anatomy of their ears. Transportation is the biggest contributor to noise pollution. Planes, trains, cars and boats all contribute to noise pollution. Overall, boats have the most directly negative effect on the ecosystem. Soundwaves created by ships and recreational boats echo throughout bodies of water affecting the vital senses of marine life. There are five major causes of thermal pollution; Soil erosion, using water as a cooling agent in power-manufacturing-industrial plants, deforestation, runoff from paved surfaces, and natural causes. Long term soil erosion causes bodies of water to rise therefore leading to a higher sunlight exposure, the increased water temperature kills aquatic biomes and can create a rise in anaerobic conditions. The use of water as a cooling agent in plants is by far the largest source when it comes to thermal pollution. Power, manufacturing and industrial plants, bring in water from nearby sources to use as a cooling agent for the machinery after the water is used it, it is released right back into the water source at a much higher temperature. The higher temperatures hurt the aquatic life and removes large amounts of oxygen from the water. Deforestation has a very similar effect on water and the things that inhabit it. When trees that grow around bodies of water are cut down, the trees no longer limit the amount of direct sunlight able to heat up the water. Finally, there’s natural causes which really cannot be prevented, but it is still important to know their effects.
