Academic cheating involves plagiarism, claiming credit for work that is not original, fraudulently using someone’s work in the exam, obtaining exam materials in advance before the due date or purchasing paper someone and presenting as his/hers and allowing someone to copy his/hers work. Some people argue that cheating is acceptable, and even virtuous in some situations. They argue that cheating is an easy way out of a situation or a unit that they are not comfortable with it. The pressure to have good grades may force one to use deceitful methods to attain the same. Most students believe that for one to succeed, he has to cheat occasionally. Other students think that as long as everyone is doing it, then cheating is acceptable.
Some institutions tend to be tolerant to academic cheats. The lack of consequence may encourage one to cheat since he knows nothing will happen even if he is caught. Harsh grading and excessive course workload may cause one to cheat. Other students cheat when they do not understand the assignment or the exam. Cheating provides a way for one to pass something that he was going to fail definitely.
Cheating is unfair to honest students. A cheater may receive better grades through deception, yet the honest students put all their effort into studying. This cheating cheapens the value of a diploma/degree. The real value of a degree cannot be felt by an employee when the degree was acquired through deceit. At Nashville State Community College, the diploma is only valuable because it is acquired through honest methods and it is a mark of excellence. By cheating, the value attached to the diploma erodes and the trust on the College is undermined if people are made aware of cheating at the campus.
Cheating perverts the central mission of education. Education is more than just learning facts. It includes the ability to solve problems, understand complicated issues and the ability to articulate one 's view.
