When a person with the disease eats a food, e.g. Bread, that contains gluten; villi will bulge and become damaged inside the small intestine. Celiac disease has been linked to the previously mentioned Type 1 diabetes. The effects this disease has on a person can be liquid bowels, abdominal pain and osteopenia, which is a form of osteoporosis, but to a lesser extent. There is a cause to worry as in the past twenty years the British Medical Journal has found that there has been a three times increase in children over two years old. As stated by the British Medical Journal during their publication, “The diagnosis rate for coeliac disease in 2008-12 among children was 75% higher than it was in 1993-97.” This can cause some concern, but they also note that the results would be because of better awareness instead of an actual increase in people with the disease. The University of Oslo in Norway claim the cause of celiac disease is that mucous membrane located in the small intestine become inflamed when the subjects were given cereal grains and that the actual amount of people with the disease is roughly one percent of the population; backing the research by the British Medical Journal that better awareness is why we see an increase in the
