An Hopeless Era The Great Depression was a time in United State’s history where tragedy was defined. America, once the most economically powerful state, holding five major self-governing territories, and various resources, obliterated. America now with stock markets crashing, no money in the bank, no homes and no jobs. One can never understand how something so little can have such a big meaning until one has lost it. In the Depression people lost jobs, families, and hope, some things people take for granted. The Great Depressions main cause was due to stock market crashes as most people know. When the Stock Markets crashed in New York many people were unemployed because there was no money to get paid. Another effect of the Great Depression is the drought we had. In the 1930’s the land was “a giant dust bowl” and many could not support their crops (Stormy Weather). Due to stock markets crashing and crops dying many people tried to move and search for jobs other places, but couldn't. The woman of America searched for jobs, even though it was not a woman's role to have a job. Woman would also not marry because they wanted to just support themselves, not have any extra mouths to feed and bodies to clothe. Woman would often sell themselves and their bodies just to get a sliver of money. Many women looked to men for help and wouldn’t think of looking for another woman.
