There were many causes that led to this attack. The United States had been threatening Germany to try to get them to retaliate, but it was not working. Japan’s ally, Germany, did not attack the United States because they knew that they had changed the World War I outcome and did not want that again. President Roosevelt went after Japan, so they would retaliate and so would Germany and Italy then. The United States wanted Japan to abandon their treaty with Germany and Italy. On December 7, Japan’s fleet was two-hundred seventy-five miles away from Hawaii. The first bomber appeared at 7:55 A.M. The radar at Pearl Harbor was unreliable and surveillance pilots were few and untrained. An army private saw planes on his radar and was told to ignore them.
