The horror happened when members of the terrorist group, Al Qaeda, hijacked 4 planes at Boston’s Logan international Airport. Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, in New York City, at 8:48 am. Then at 9:03 am, flight 175 crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. The New York events were carried live on TV for the world to see. A third plane hit the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. . The fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. Brave passengers on that flight prevented it from crashing into the capitol in Washington. There were no survivors on all four planes.

The value of the four planes that crashed were estimated to cost a combined total of 385 million dollars. The destruction of buildings in New York City, including the World Trade Center, had a replacement cost of 3 to 4.5 billion dollars. Damage to the Pentagon cost 1 billion to repair. The clean up cost of 9/11 has been estimated at 1.3 billion. The financial value of the lives lost can never be truley measured.
Airport security changed significantly after 9/11. The government took over airport security creating the TSA department. Forty billion dollars has been spent to retrofit planes with anti-terrorist devices. Air marshalls now routinely fly on many planes.
