The novel “Giovanni’s Room” by James Baldwin surrounds itself in the main characters confusing. The main character named David goes through many mistakes since he does not know what he wants in life. David has hurt himself emotionally, as well as other people. According to Colm Tóibín, in an interview in 1980 the author James Baldwin has said that most of his inspiration came from his real life experience. According Baruch’s College interview with James Baldwin, even though in the novel the characters were white, at that time people would not have not read the novel if the author is a Negro, especially negro and homosexual. Then, David became very distant with Giovanni to process what he has done and later caused Giovanni emotional problem. Hella finally came back and decided to be with David and she thought her love for him was reciprocated. At first, David thought he loved her. As soon as she got to Paris he went to pick her out and spend a couple of days with her in Paris. He left without telling Giovanni a word about where he was going. According to the book, Hella and David went to look around town and encountered Giovanni and he was just “… standing stock-still… when Giovanni spoke, his voice was thick with fury and relief and unshed tears”(Baldwin, 80). This quote illustrates the start of how David broke Giovanni's heart. David went on living life with Hella but he can not get Giovanni out of his head. One drunk evening he went to Giovanni's room just to find Giovanni sitting by the bed and according to David “Giovanni stared at me and turned on his side, facing the wall, and began to cry” (Baldwin, 85). At last, David said to Giovanni “I”ll not be coming back, You know I won't be back” (Baldwin, 89) and then the next morning he packed his bags to Hella place. Later, Giovanni was lost without David and suddenly the police was looking for Giovanni for the killing of Guillaume who is Giovanni’s boss. According to Tóibín, in an interview Baldwin’s stated his book is ‘‘not so much about homosexuality, it is what happens if you are so afraid that you finally cannot love anybody.’’ Baldwin’s quote sums up the entire story. Since, David was raised expected to be a certain way affected him to be his true self and later caused to hurt other people unintentionally. He never had the motive to hurt Hella or Giovanni, it happened because he himself was confused of what kind of man he had to be. After all, he ended up realizing he is homosexual after he lost both loves ones but mostly Giovanni who he truly loved.
It is clear that, David lost his beloved due to his traditional beliefs. This is exactly the butterfly effect which is the cause and effect. If David would of dated Giovanni there will be a different outcome. Additionally, the cause of many situations in the novel end up in terrible effects and all the terrible effects could have been prevented. In the end, people always learn all from their experiences and James Baldwin expressed that I the
