The civil war was a result caused by slavery, the election of Abraham Lincoln and the Southern Secession.
The future of slavery depended on the union. African-American slaves helped build the economic foundations of the new nation. The south valued slaves for large plantations and other task. Slaves were mostly important because it meant that large farms could plant large amounts of crop and own workers without having to pay them.
