In "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald, there are two characters that share a huge part in the story together. The narrator, Nick Carraway, and Jay Gatsby, formally known as John Gatz. Throughout the story, these two characters show their true colors and we truly find out what is under the slicked back hair and fancy suits. Although there are several other characters who grow and develop, I found that Gatsby and Carraway's personalities were the most intriguing.

Nick was coincidentally neighbors with one of the most sketchy guys in all of New York, Jay Gatsby. Nick's cousin, Daisy, has a repulsive husband Tom Buchanan who is secretly having an affair with a woman named Myrtle who lives out of town. Nick finds out about the affair and cannot stop thinking about how wrong this situation is but is reluctant to tell Daisy, partially because she already knows about it. Nick then forms an opinion of Tom and how much of a jerk he is. Nick then gets invited to one of Gatsby's marvelous party's and he went to see how great these parties really are. He went and saw people getting drunk and dancing and acting crazy and so he decided to join in on the fun and he drank a ton and met Jordan Baker, a famous tennis player to whom he soon formed a relationship with. Everybody knows him as a rich man who throws outrageous parties. However, no one knows exactly where he got his money from or why he throws parties every weekend, they don’t care to find out either. Gatsby grew up in poverty and felt like he always had to do without, meaning he never got the glamorous parties, fancy suits, and billions of dollars. So, to change his lifestyle Gatsby started bootlegging alcohol and doing other illegal things to get money. This shows that Gatsby is motivated to do anything to get more money, even if it means breaking the law. Gatsby's motivation to accomplish goals is what gets him to where he wants to be in life. Gatsby and Daisy have a steamy past and have some unfinished business they need to take care of, Gatsby is not willing to let 'the girl of his dreams' go just yet. Before the war, Daisy and Gatsby meet and fall in love, but Daisy refuses to keep seeing him because she figures out that he is poor and she wants to be with a rich man, this motivates Gatsby to be a rich man so he can try and win Daisy back. The reason behind the parties that Gatsby throws are to entice Daisy into coming so he can get a chance to talk with her. Gatsby sends her an invitation before every party and every time there is no Daisy to be seen, leaving Gatsby with nothing else to do but to keep throwing parties in hopes that she will come and thinking of other ways to get closer to the woman without
