Concussions are a very serious, non-visible injury that involves some type of trauma of the brain. In sports, there are higher chances of someone sustaining a concussion. Since concussions are non-visible, trainers and doctors rely on people to report whether they think they may have sustained a concussion or not. Symptoms vary from person to person, and sometimes symptoms may not show up until 24 hours later. Without the proper treatment and recovery period, if someone were to sustain a second concussion before the first one has healed, it could lead to death. Based off of Davies and Bird’s research, many did not know. If players are unaware of what the signs and symptoms of a concussion are, they may just think they are not feeling well, not really understanding what is going on with their brain at the time. Going back to second impact syndrome, if a player is unable to recognize themselves they have a concussion, it is possible they could continue to practice and play, and sustain another concussion that could potentially lead to death. Athletic trainers and coaches may not see that a player just took a big hit to the head, as there are 11 players total on the field all moving at the same time. With symptoms sometimes not showing up until hours later, it could possibly be too late for that player that took the blow to the head, which is why it is so important to self report the possibility of a concussion.
