Cause And Effect In Auto Wreck Poem

Improved Essays
In Shapiro's "Auto Wreck," the speaker questions the role of cause and effect in human experience as opposed to random chaos. In the poem, the speaker views an “accident” as situations that seem to occur without a concise cause and effect relationship. In life, we usually see a clear relationship between what happens in our lives. However, when that order eventuates in chaos, we tend become guilty of seeing ourselves as victims of these situations. Thus, despite the uncertainty of the horrors of being alive, no one is innocent because we are guilty of not preventing these “accidents” in life and taking action after these “accidents” occur.

Soldiers in war die because another human being shoots them. Also, due to various causes, the end result is suicide. In both of these situations, we see a cause and effect relationship. Similarly, there is a cause and effect relationship in these “accidents.” This is because after an “auto wreck,” we become knowledgeable of the causes. However, what truly matters is the effect of what we do with what we learned from the causes. In the poem, the speaker along with the others in the accident decides to accept this “banal resolution.” Thus, the speaker and the bystanders are to blame for failing to be effective in order to prevent this disaster from reoccurring. For example, if the cause of the accident was intoxication, the effect of this cause would be for the speaker and the others to take action to ensure that others do not drink and drive. Thus, we are responsible for taking action after these “accidents” to prevent them from

In "Poetry Makes Nothing Happen" by Julia Alvarez, the speaker is implying that there is a much deeper meaning. Poetry can bring all kinds of feelings and emotions, like cheering someone up, encouraging someone, inspiring someone, even possibly giving someone a better outlook on life. Different characters in this poem use poetry to help them. "Listening to a poem on the radio, Mike Holmquist stayed awake on his drive home." (Alvarez, 704) From this, the reader can see that listening to poetry on the radio made Mike feel like he wasn't alone and helped him stay awake while driving.…

The author Charles Baxter read from his books, one about a teacher and another about someone who was in an accident. In the one first one he talked about a teacher who was telling nonsense to her fourth grade class. This teacher talked and talked, knowing that her students were listening attentively trying to absorb as much as they can from her rant. The kids were more interested in what she was saying than moving on to arithmetic. It showed how kids are very gullible.…

This section explores the horror of a traffic collision. In particular, Martin was the one that stood out to me the most in this chapter besides the author. My reasons are that Martin simply did the best he could to help his patient, doing his job, and strictly followed orders from the hospital. Although, he did everything he could, he couldn’t save his patient and the bystanders were in his face. I…

In a dangerous situation, it’s not always a person’s decision to whether they live or not. For example, there are many factors that can increase or decrease the chance of one’s survival. These factors could be from the weather conditions a person is in, or could be a person’s disability to perform an action. If somebody is out at sea like the crew from “The Voyage of the James Caird” and in severe weather conditions, they shouldn’t be blamed for their actions because they have no control over what kinds of environments they may find themselves facing. This is a reason why people shouldn’t be responsible for their actions in a dangerous situation because lowering somebody’s chances of survival and then blaming that person if they die isn’t logical.…

    The Victims Poem Analysis

Upon initial reading, “The Victims” by Sharon Olds seems to be a poem that paints the picture of a life of abuse; starting from the dawning of the exploitation and arching over into the life of the abused following the maltreatment. In the work, it is made to be believed that the clear victims of the poem are the speaker and their family—which is a rightful and obvious assumption—but there is another victim that is not as prevalent as that of the speaker and their family: the speaker’s father. After a second read, it is made evidently apparent that although the work does focus on the speaker and their family as the victims of the poem, the ideal that the father is also a victim is explored. Since the father is depicted as an abuser, it is seen…

An Accident Waiting to Happen In life, an innocent bystander, parent, or friend could receive news that would change their life forever. A death of a loved one is something that can drop someone to their knees in agony. Karl Shapiro’s “Auto Wreck” faces the hard truth that is a car accident. To summarize, “Auto Wreck” is a gut-wrenching retelling of a brutal accident in which two cars collide in a fatal accident. The poem concludes on a more philosophical note explaining the certainty that is faced in true death and how unseen and sudden a car accident can be on a family.…

I have come to the point where I cherish these journals because I am able to express my emotions coherently with an unbiased audience, in a way they are comforting. Emotion is something that defines who we are as person, our daily attitude, and how we will perceive unique events in our lives. I really enjoyed this chapter because of the main focus of emotion. To be honest I rarely show my emotions, I try to surpass them, but I am fully aware when I am experiencing diverse emotions and the feeling they give me as I experience my daily distinctive life. I understood the definition given by the author concerning emotion as something that defines you for a major time in your life, it may be a day or a few weeks, but it is something that is prolonged.…
