On Sunday October 11th, I went to the St. Paul Catholic Church located on 2127 West 22nd Place, Chicago, IL to observe the environment of the church and people’s behavior. I chose to observe the Catholic Church because it is a public place where everyone is welcome, no matter you are religious or no; there are no restrictions on who may be there. (Gordon, P. 70) The location is really nice for a church because it is inside a nice neighborhood without a lot a noise cause by traffics.
I decided visit the church at 9:45 in the morning because there was an English mass at 10am, and it would give me a little time to observe the environment before the mass. The church is very magnificent, both outside and inside because it was built since 1876, …show more content…
The temperature was a lot warmer compare to the outdoor temperature as it was pretty windy that day. I immediately saw Jesus Christ on the Cross with the word “Inri” marked on the cross, and also the statue of St. Cecilia on the right hand side. The statue of Moses and St. John the Baptist are located on the left hand side of the entrance. There were some church members standing at the entrance welcoming people and handing out the scripture booklets, they were very friendly. We had to pass through another door in order to go into the church. Above the door, there is an angel holding a book with the line “Henceforth time shall be no more” written on it. There were several Holy water stands provided there and Catholics are supposed to use the Holy water to draw the sign of the cross before entering the church. After the priest finished reading his part of the scriptures, he continued to give his homily and shared some Catholic teaching with everybody. People around me concentrated a lot on the priest’s homily because the content is very practical, and it provides insight into the meaning of the scripture. Additionally, I could also hear the choir singing the beautiful hymns. The echoes of their voice were very loud and surrounds the surface of the church. During the time when the priest were reading the scriptures about “The Liturgy of the Eucharist”, I also smelled myrrh. I learned that the myrrh has a meaning of venerate, bless, and sanctify. At the middle of the mass, people started to line up to accept the “body of Christ” and the red wine, which refers to the “blood of Christ”. After that, they returned to their seats to pray quietly, and the choirs continue singing the
