Saint Teresa of Calcutta was born on August 26, 1910 in Macedonia to a family who valued charity and were practicing Catholics. Teresa was taught from a very early age to help the poor because her mother would bring in the poor to her house every night for a meal. At the age of twelve, she felt a call to become a nun. After a few years she joined the Sisters of Loreto. In 1931, she was assigned to teach at St. Mary's Catholic High School in Calcutta, India to teach to poor Bengali girls.
