Research shows there is a high statistical probability of receiving a catheter associated urinary tract infection. This chance is increased the longer an indwelling catheter stays in place. UTIs can lead to bacteremia, which is a bacterial infection of the blood and can be life threatening. Catheter associated bacteremia is a risk and is sometimes not survivable. There are ways to mediate risk. Evaluate if the need for catheter is still indicated and assess patient for removal. Have a definitive date for removal scheduled. Ensuring the catheter size is correct will help decrease the risk of incorrect placement which can cause tissue damage. Use aseptic technique when inserting catheter after cleaning insertion area with sterile solution.
