During these two units of architecture and Paleolithic Art, I have come across several highlights that will give one an idea of what each unit was about. In the video, “Cathedral of Norte Dame” by Khan Academy, explains how it was the oldest church in its era. It possessed a relic, which is an object that holds special powers, for example in this case, the supposedly Virgin Mary’s tunic. People would travel great distances to see the relic and be closed to the Virgin Mary. Unfortunately, in 1194 the church burned completely and the town felt it lost its place of protection, along with the relic. Unexplainably, the relic was found unharmed three days later and the church was rebuilt during Pre-gothic times. In the video, “Saint Peter’s Basilica” by Khan Academy as well, explains how the church is built on a commonly known Basilica Plan that most churches follow. It contained a narrow pathway to lead to the speaker of the church. Saint Peter was the first pope to have this church built in the Vatican City of Rome. He had gathered many great artists, like Michelangelo, to create his church. An obscure piece of architecture is Frank Lloyd’s Fallingwater that was made in 1938 and captured by Time Magazine, for its imagination aspect upon people. Overall, it represented a great architect. Old Kingdom: Pyramid of Khufu, by Khan Academy, states its height of 431 feet, built by the Pharaoh Khufu. I liked the fact that its imperfect stone placement left no access to the inside but ultimately with technology, lead robots to access the inside. A favorite feature of mine was the chambers, which included the King’s, Queen’s, and a burial one. The Queens chamber was just below the King’s red granite one. A feature of the boats used for burial was found in the pyramid and a set of disassembled boats were found as well.

Marvin Trachtenberg, “Suger’s Miracles, Branner’s Bourges: Reflections on “Gothic Architecture” as Medieval Modernism”, Gesta, 39.2 (2000)m 183-205. In his article, Marvin Trachtenberg aims to redefine our understanding of words like “modern” and “historicism” in regards to Gothic architecture. To prove his point, he uses Suger’s St. Denis along with Bourges Cathedral as examples, but he begins with a lengthy investigation into the language we use to describe Gothic architecture, including the word itself. Trachtenberg proposes the elimination of the “Gothic architecture,” as a label and instead adopting the term “medieval modernism” to describe the architecture we see from the time period.…

I found it interesting that in this section of the short story, I interpreted what Robert says (“they’re no different from the rest of us, right?” (pg.10)) as if he is comparing the work ethic in those Roman times to the present day. Robert reveals that this is really all he knows about the cathedrals. He asked the narrator if “maybe [he] could describe one to [him]?”(pg.10).…

Roger E. Reynolds, “Liturgy and the Monument”, in Artistic Integration in Gothic Buildings (Toronto ; Buffalo : University of Toronto Press, 1995), 57-68. In his article, Roger Reynolds argues that liturgy and cathedrals and a relationship of mutual adaptation. He argues that they would each adapt their forms and traditions to the other depending on which preceded in each specific case, (i.e. an older building with contemporary liturgy, or a new building being built to fit liturgical practices). In his argument, Reynolds describes the buildings and liturgy as “integrated” and presses the importance of scholarship on them being integrated as well.…

The Durham Cathedral stands out as one of the most elaborate and beautifully constructed cathedrals in England. This very distinct Norman architecture has made many of the English cathedrals very iconic in design dated around this same period. This cathedral, constructed between 1093 and 1133, uses very large columnar piers to support the entire structure from the nave arcades, to the grand central openings, to the large ceiling vaults. From the pictures I can conjure up, the building is remarkably detailed in its construction. The columns consists of spiral fluting grooves, diamond patterns, and zigzagging V’s known as chevrons.…

These bricks were a relatively new technology and a new material the Russians were learning to build with. The alignment of the building from basement up indicates that there was a plan for the construction of the cathedral. It shows that the Russians used drawings and measurements to accurately build the cathedral. At one point in time the cathedral needed brick restoration and repointing, and during the restoration a building mason discovered that the massive brick walls concealed an internal wooden structure. This wooden structure was a frame made out of intricately tied thin studs that ran the entire height of the church.…
