Yes, the story is worth reading more than once. It bears close scrutiny that I think I feel and experience more with each reading. I have already read it three times and feel like reading it again. It pleasantly portrays an atmosphere of painful helplessness and tiredness that accompany stressed situations. It’s an instinctual effect that Carver seizes brilliantly through his choices of what to share. However, the story is successful in its picturesque exploration of the themes of loneliness and connectedness. I believe that the very point of the story is to exemplify how we are all separate from one another and yet still attempt to connect in our isolation. I was able to comprehend her situation because my grandfather died due to a sudden medical issue. Due to this experience, I was able to relate to the characters in the story. Carver is trying to tell us an important lesson that tragedy is central to life. Life goes on even as the most terrible things happen to others, and we and there’s nothing that can be done to avoid it. We often don’t think about that when the situations are going well. In tragic situations, we feel connected, even though we have little to say to each other. This can be seen in the story when Ann feels compelled to share her story with Franklin’s family, as she feels connected to them, even though they had little to …show more content…
It has always been hard for me to lose people I love the most; this story helped me to overcome that feeling and feel better every time I read it.
