There is a plethora of justifications to ban books from school, such as offensive languages, sexual explicitness or even violence. There books that make sense to be banned as it is extreme to young child's eyes, such as 50 Shade of Grey by E. L. James, while there are books on the ban list that holds an educational value and should be taught to the public, such as Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. There is some book that contains a miniscule of sexual explicit and violence, but some of these books have a greater educational value than the insignificant scenes. The Invisible Man is a perfect example, since it does depict some scene of nudity, but overall, the book teaches the reader about open one mind to other’s point of view and with this can open a whole new world for the better. The Invisible Man educational values may have a different approach from most books introduce to school, but overall Ellison still demonstrates the moral of the narrative.…

Most schools however ban it because of sexually explicit material. They don’t want the kids to be forced to have to hear anything that is unfit for the ears. School Board member Scott Veerkamp says when talking about a book called Song of Solomon, "I think if we give them a book with that smut in it, it legitimizes it” (Penner Par. 15). The book he is talking of a book about a black man who comes to grips with a complex family history. It also begins with suicide and ends with suicide and has a few sexual passages.…

Throughout the novel, Holden gets drunk and talks about getting drunk numerous times; he also smokes constantly. At one point he begins flirting with a singer in a bar and says, “I probably wouldn’t have done it, but I was getting drunk as hell” (Salinger 165). When readers see Holden having an amusing time getting drunk, it allows them to assume they could have just as much fun if they got drunk. In much the the same way, when they see how smoking relaxes Holden, there is nothing to keep them from thinking that smoking would do the same for them. The same teenager who discussed vulgar language in Teen Ink also declared, “In the two nights [Holden] is in New York, he is intoxicated a good portion of the time.…

The book is narrated by the protagonist and it details his life up until the day he finishes writing his memories. The beginning details his childhood in Afghanistan with his best friend, and servant, up until his twelfth summer, the summer of 1975, for which he never truly forgave himself for. Some people just want to hang out with the “cool kids”. Certain people will go to far lengths to hang out with certain people if it means drinking, smoking, and just doing stuff you objectify too. Even certain people I know that are in high school drink too much and outside, when those people are drink I can tell it's because they're sad inside, they're are people who think that the bottom of a bottle is going to be more helpful than talking to someone. When reading the Catcher in the Rye you realize Holden goes through all of these, at certain points he's in a bar talking to 3 older ladies he drinks to fit in with them thinking it will make him look older. One of the banned books is the book, 1984 by George Orwell. Reading 1984 in high school would be nothing new to high school students. So 1984 should be kept in the high school curriculum because it involves a good plot and interesting storyline, and the book is so similar to high school life that students would be able to connect to it better than adults. The content involved in the book, such as sexual content, and disturbing imagery is much more viewed in today’s society with video games and movies, that in 1984, it seems as though it were censored. So in conclusion, the book should be kept in the high school curriculum and not be…

According to the American Library Association 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982. The school board has banned many books for no reason. The novel The House on Mango Street is an example of one of these many banned books. The TUSD board banned this book because it “promotes the overthrow of the US government, promotes resentment to a race or class of people, and is designed primarily for one ethnic group.” Clearly you can tell that the school board banned this book without doing their research, because it never talked about the overthrow of the government.…

Fortunately, for every group pushing for bans on literature, there are organizations that fight for this freedom. One such organization is the American Civil Liberties Union. In the year 2000, when discussing the topic of book banning, the organization stated that, “Permitting restraints on literature sets the stage for attacks on all expression that is artistically or politically controversial or that portrays unpleasant realities of life” (American Civil Liberties Union). Although some books may contain graphic violence or sexual content, and therefore of course should be kept out of the hands of children, I’d like to think that these widespread en masse bans of such literature are a poor way to go about it. It’s not as if middle or high school students are incapable of understanding and comprehending dark or more adult subject matter.…
