As a teen, Holden was doing poorly in school, demonstrating little responsibility, and little interest in life. He was afraid of growing up, and because of that he searched for purpose. Holden didn’t want to let go of his childhood, therefore wanted to help children by being the catcher in the rye, saving children if they were going to fall off the “cliff”. The purpose of the story is to illustrate the process of acceptance in young teens, acceptance in which we must grow up and be inevitably become adults in life.
