In New York, after Holden checks into his room at the hotel, he calls a woman named Faith Cavendish. He got her number from a friend and believes she used to be a stripper. He called her thinking he could talk her into having sex with him that night. It is too late and Holden hangs up the phone on her. Holden then goes to the bar in the hotel and flirts with three older women and ends up dancing with them. They laugh at him due to his age and leave him to pay the bar tab. Holden calls several people he knows including Sally Hayes, a girl he has dated in the past. Holden talks with her about why he dislikes school tries to persuade Sally to run away with him to live in a cabin in Vermont. After leaving Sally, he meets his old student advisor Carl Luce. Holden tries to get Luce to discuss sex with him, but Luce gets irritated with Holden’s remarks about homosexuals and leaves. Throughout the evening, Holden has inquired with childlike innocence about where the ducks go when the pond freezes. He has asked several strangers on a couple of occasions.
