In today’s fast-paced society, the definition of modern is constantly changing as genius minds invent and introduce brilliant ideas and innovations to the world. “Modern” pertains to something that relates to recent times, or the present, however, how recent can modern be? For example, modern literature sprouted at the start of World War I, and about a century later, many scholars claim that the Modernist movement has not yet ended. Originating in the United States and Britain, Modernism was the result of the Great War, which had destroyed morals, values, and religion in numerous individuals (Ebner). The youths of the country rebelled against the older generation for causing the mass destruction of the war. Moreover, the world seemed to be spinning faster, and many young people went on a search for their identities. The closing of 1929 brought the Great Depression, which added to the modernistic theme of loneliness and confusion (Ebner). While leaving Mr. Spencer’s home, Holden thinks, “After I shut the door and started back to the living room, he yelled something at me, but I couldn’t exactly hear him. I’m pretty sure he yelled ‘Good Luck!’ at me. I hope not. I hope to hell not. I’d never yell ‘Good Luck!’ at anybody.
