Catchers should have the right to block the plate. If a catcher was to guard the plate with his body before the rule was made he would get the runner out if he holds onto the ball. Now if a catcher barely blocks a sliding lane it is an obstruction call and he would be safe even if he tags the runner out. The rule states that the catcher is not allowed to block the plate without giving the runner a lane otherwise it is obstruction. If the runner hits the catcher or doesn’t slide when it is a close play at the plate then the runner is out. Some games come to a last-second play at the plate.
