DATA ANALYSIS The linear relationships between the time elapsed and the volume of gas indicates a constant enzyme reaction rate. The activity rate of catalase in figure 1 is calculated to be approximately 0.15mL/sec. The following figures show how this rate of reaction is affected by different external factors. The results in figures 2 and 5 show an increase in either enzyme concentration or substrate concentration will increase the enzyme activity. In figure 2, the 0.75% enzyme concentration had the highest enzyme activity with a rate of 0.11mL/sec; whereas the 0.25% enzyme concentration only had a activity rate of 0.04mL/sec. Similarly, in figure 5, the 3.00% substrate concentration had an activity rate of 0.15mL/sec; whereas the 0.00% …show more content…
This is because catalase functions in the human body, where the normal temperature is 37°C. Higher and lower temperatures caused the catalase to denature and lose its function, thus lowering the reaction rate. The results further show that catalase has the highest activity at a pH of 10. However, this is believed to be an error because the normal conditions under which catalase functions is pH 7.

ERROR ANALYSIS There is error in the measurement on the effect of pH on enzyme activity because the optimal pH of catalase is 7, not 10 because pH 7 is closer to the pH in the human body, where catalase normally functions. This error could have arose from ineffective buffers; the solution used was not actually that basic. Furthermore, there are errors in the measurements. There is some error in measuring the volume of gas because it is impossible to tell the instantaneous measurement of the gas level. This might have caused error in the 0.0% substrate concentration experiment, where there somehow was still enzyme activity. There is also human error in measuring the enzymes and substrate used in the experiment. Lastly, there is error resulting from the instability of the experimental apparatus. It was hard to keep the stopper completely capped on the reaction chamber, which could have caused the tap water to interact with the enzyme as well, resulting in minute
