When I was a kid, Dr. Seuss was a constant source of inspiration for me. His stories filled my head with endless possibilities. From The Cat in the Hat, I was pretty much prepared for making the most of any day. I was often reminded of the genius Dr. Seuss was and the impact that his books have had. His books managed to inspire creativity, individuality and a plethora of other valuable qualities. Through characters such as the Lorax, we are shown these admirable qualities, but through character such as Once-ler, the man who cut down the beautiful multi-colored trees, in find for something that “everyone needed”, it showed that the reward for conformity is that everyone else likes you except yourself. Egotism or setting yourself above those around you is not what individuality is about, it’s about understanding and truly valuing what makes you - you. Now gather around children and let me give you “The Talk.” Now is about you and how you grow up and no it’s not that “talk” you perverts. Well anyways, individuality is like a garden of the self. This garden holds all the seedlings and plants that grow within the area called “me.” Talents, interests, pursuits, characteristics, and whatever you value in life are in these seedlings. So what do you do? As an individual, it is your responsibility to ensure that all of your own seedlings are watered, fed, and cared for by the self. Everyone needs to take care of their own garden - feeding, watering, and weeding it, and never letting it die. Take time to do the things you like. Pursue your interests.
