The idea of family is one of the first things many people probably learn at a young age but in reality it is a difficult subject to understand at all. Over many decades people have tried to come up with a concrete definition for family and have found it is almost impossible. Aside from the “Nuclear family,” which is close knit blood relatives including a mother, father and children, times have changed and there are many different types of people make up today’s family. Including ones with a single parent, a family with a step parent, and same sex parents, which could mean adoption also. Each generation of family adds to the variety and that could be how family has shifted so much over time. Family alters so much in a person’s life so why …show more content…
After same sex marriage became legal the amount of same sex ‘families’ increased but that’s because two single men might not be considered a family in society. The play “Cat on a hot tin roof” addresses a lot of these household barriers and that was made decades ago. In that time period (50’s) it was absurd to love someone of the same sex and one could be very mistreated for admitting such a thing. Luckily that is one thing everybody is in acceptance of today. Some might wonder why the laws even apply to gender at all considering marriage started out as a legal contract with no romantic ties. Love has never been a choice yet people decide to restrict it as much as possible, and that is why the dynamic of family has had to change. It stands for an expression of freedom in this society. The purest form of defiance is being happy. What can make someone more happy than being surrounded by the ones who truly love …show more content…
In older generations young kids would go to work and help funding for the house and pay for their own schooling with no other choice. Present day parents shell out hundreds of thousands of dollars for school with no question. Over time it was realized that being a kid is the most stressful time of one’s life so the support has increased tremendously over the years. Yet somehow more and more kids are choosing to become self sufficient not wanting to have to rely on anybody else. One type of “family” that is overlooked would be when a child becomes emancipated from their parents, making them their own guardian. Basically they choose to live on their own due to a number of different circumstances. Which could be scary but sometimes someone’s family aren’t the people they need or want in their

Fox & Luxton (2014) explores the concept of family through multiple approaches; structural functionalism perspective, the feminist approach, and the evolutionary psychology approach. The reading also questions the characteristics of the constructed “family” – whether the notion of family should only encompass biologically relations, or can it extend to non-biological people who has provided unlimited emotional and personal support (Fox & Luxton, 2014, p.3). As well, Fox & Luxton (2014) examine the historical and social trends associated with the concept of family. Families used to be refer to a mother, a father and their children. In society, a family is made up of two or more members, that can be related by blood, marriage, or adoption. But around the world some people have a family that is different from other's based on the way their culture has taught them to be. A better way to understand the meaning of family is to apply the three major sociological theories. The first theory is the Functionalist by Emile Durkheim which explains that society has to follow certain functions and how the basic needs are helpful to live in any kind of society there is in this world. The way to understand this theory by applying it to family is the incest taboo that makes mandatory to look for a partner from a different family that is not your own.…

However, just like in Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, once the “Godfather” figure of a Mafia dies, one of his sons succeeds him as the head of the family. This correlates to how once Big Daddy is dead, his plantation will be handed down to one of his kids. In the mafia, because of the honor of handing down and inheriting the family, the patriarchal family structure forcibly imposes a tremendous expectation of men to step up and be the providers, the hard workers, and the empire builders. Gooper exhibits this as his wife describes him as “always had to carry a bigger load of responsibilities than Brick ever had t’ carry… Why, Gooper has given himself body and soul to keeping this place up for the past five years since Big Daddy's health started failing.…

The definition of a family had different interpretations depending on the time frame. From the Middle Ages to the 18th century, the meaning of family consisted of a “larger kinship group from which they derived their claims to privilege and property” (Coontz, 36). Interesting enough, European writers in the seventeenth century described man’s family as his offspring only with his wife playing a separate role. In the 1820’s, the rise of the market economy contributed to the division of work and home. As a consequence, this created complications with the previous family structural system as families could no longer rely on the food that they grew.…

Traditionally, family may be defined as a group of people linked directly by blood relations, wherein the adults take responsibility for their young ones (Giddens, 2001, p.433). However, there has been no legitimate agreement on an exact definition. What is clearer is the definition of family structure. Family structure (what a family consists of) is an integral variable in the constitution of a society. The British society specifically, has been witness to a variety of family structures that have resulted from changes and trends that have occurred in the economy, the political policies and other such disciplines of social sciences.…
