He is very nervous but he is not mad. The narrator claims he has a disease which has "sharpened my senses." It foreshadows that this guy is unstable. The old man lives with a bulging eye that seems to bother the narrator. This conflicts with the narrator's claim that he is a good judge of character and really smart.

The story is about an unnamed man who kills the elderly man he lives with because he thinks the man's eye is "evil." Though it appears he will get away with the murder, the narrator gives himself away at the end.
