Casuality In The Film Freakonomics

Improved Essays
My overall impression of Freakonomics pertaining to the subject matter is that the documentary segments focus in on real-life struggles that families from all different walks of life go through. It was interesting to find out names can have an affect how well a child performs in school and their future careers. The definition of causality seems unnecessary in everyday life. We define causality as a connection between two events or states that one produces or brings about the other; where one is the cause and the other is the effect. For instance, in the film Freakonomics, it was believed that in the late 1940s children would contract an infectious disease known as polio after eating a substantial amount of ice-cream. For my film analysis, I chose to analyze the movie “The Outsiders” directed by Francis Ford Coppola and based on the novel “The Outsiders” by S. E. Hinton. In this movie, a gang of outcasts from the north side of town called the Greasers are always fighting against a rival group called the Socials, who are the rich jocks from the south side of town. The story follows two young Greasers, Johnny and Ponyboy, who aren’t like the others. These two see that fighting is pointless, but it’s just the way they live their life. The two boys get into a fight with some Socials and end up killing one.…

In the book Freakonomics the authors, Stephen Levitt and Stephen Dubner, takes a novel approach to studying economics, sharing its most interesting research. First they begin with the topic of correlation and causation. According to them correlation means, “A relationship exists between two factors—let’s call them X and Y—but it tells you nothing about the direction of that relationship. It’s possible that X causes Y; it’s also possible that Y causes X; and it may be that X and Y are both being caused by some other factor, Z. ” (8). One the other hand, causation is when one object affects the other object.…

Some people grow up with bad influences or within a bad environment around them, and these could turn the people into criminals or killers if they see that bad behavior is acceptable or has no consequences. The critically acclaimed show Freaks and Geeks is a shining example of a TV show that ended far too early. Freaks and Geeks was a show that captured the awkwardness of adolescence, as opposed to the romanticized and nostalgic view typically portrayed on TV. Shortly after Freaks and Geeks ended, a spiritual successor arose in the form of the show Undeclared, created by Judd Apatow, a producer of Freaks and Geeks. Where Freaks and Geeks was more drama than comedy, Undeclared was a lighthearted show that explored the college experience. Although Undeclared presents plots typical to the college experience, due to the lighthearted tone of the show, aspects of typical college life are presented too simplistically.…
