As one is walking through an outdoor market your eye is drawn to a colorful poster. It is a sunny day in the poster, with beautiful azure, calm, waters and a white sandy beach. There are a populist of people on the beach. To the eye of the beholder, you would purchase this poster for the right price, frame the poster, and hang it in a family room. It would not enter your mind that this is a propaganda poster used to give hope for a better life for men, women, and children. The poster tells the whole story about the revolution, and time period Castro entered Havana Cuba. The artist of this poster is unknown, however “one artist by the name of Felix Mederos in 1973 created a series of posters on the history of the Cuban revolution. Commenorating the 20th anniversary of the assault on the Morcada” (Corrigan 15). He was the most popular propaganda artist in the region at the time. The subtitle under the poster read “flee Batista! Join the revolution and rid the country of the corruption and inequality bred by the selfish, greedy Batista. Castro is a man of the people a forceful, visionary and independent leader who will not supplicate to American business and jeopardize the sovereignty of the country just to increase wealth” (Kilkenny). To analyze the poster further one would look at the colors some muted by their use of pastels and darker color as the eyes move to the figures in authority. The struggles are portrayed by the smaller background figures looking for a vision to be free from oppression. The image shows a time period when Castro came riding in a jeep into Havana after Batista left the island. It identifies who is in authority the propagandist. The large sign indicates the target audience. The oppressor is gone and the masses are free by their charismatic leader. This poster gives hope to the people, dreams of a new government who promised a better life on this beautiful tropical island.
