As I stared across the bullet-torn battlefield I wondered how I ended up here; hiding behind a crumbling wall, clutching my gun as though it were a lifeline. How the young kid I'd once been now bore a dirty, camouflage patterned uniform. There I was, contemplating my life in the middle of a battle. I shouldn't have been surprised when a hand suddenly shot out in front of my face and smacked me upside the head. It was so unexpected that I nearly stumbled out from behind the rubble and right into the bullet whizzing by. The hand reached out once more and yanked my uniform back behind the rubble. Before I could even mumble out a thank you, a familiar voice began to grumble."Dear God, man. Do you want to get shot?" I looked over to see Hale reloading …show more content…
"We don't have time to bring him back to the base. I don't know if you remember, but we are on a mission. We can't just drop everything to try and save someone who clearly doesn't have a chance," he said, looking at Peter as though he were a particularly pesky insect.
"I am not leaving him behind, Sir," growled Hale with barely contained rage.
"None of us are," I confirmed.
"There's no point in taking him anywhere," Boran argued in a furious tone. "Even if he isn't dead yet, he will be soon. I won't waste my time on this. Finish the mission. That's an order. If he's still alive by the time we get back, then you can take him to camp."
"He won't last that long. Please," I begged.
"Get moving," said Boran with a note of finality. None of us moved.
"What are you, deaf as well as stupid? I said move," he ordered once again. Still, our eyes stayed fixed on Peter's still form. For a moment, the only sound was Peter's ragged breathing. Then, Boran exploded.
"I'll have you all kicked out of the army! Do you hear me? No job will ever take you," Boran screamed, enraged. When we still had no reaction Boran paused. "If you won't follow me because of him, maybe he shouldn't be here at all," he said in a quiet, solemn voice. Boran took out his pistol and aimed it at Peter. "He'll

Boran fell unconscious onto the floor, revealing Richard, holding the butt of his rifle as a baseball bat.

Suddenly, Peter began to shift. His eyelids flustered open and he immediately began to talk.
"Hey guys, what am I doing on the floor?" Peter looked over at Boran."What is he doing on the floor? What happened?" he questioned rapidly.
"You were shot. How're you feeling?" I asked.
"I got shot? Cool. Now I've got battle wounds," Peter blabbered, his smile a bit too wide.
"What'd you give him? Morphine?" Hale asked, concerned.
"Yeah. I didn't know how much he'd need so I just gave him as much as I had," I answered.
"Well, what do we do with him?" Matthew asked, gesturing toward Boran.
"We bring him back to camp. Say he fell on a rock and hit his head. He can't remember clearly with a concussion." I

The ringing in my ear and the white in my eyes were no sounds of heaven, but of war. It was not the angel’s coming down from above to take me back up, but it was the aftermath of a M84 Stun Grenade. This affected the whole unit, even outside the door frame. They stood there blindly, Jackson’s finger was tight on the trigger. After it cleared, Jackson rushed to the right side of the door and his leading officer, Garrison, stood ready on the left side.…

"17 Km from Caracol" Israel Alpuche As I stood atop of Caracol1 I became one with nature, amazed at such beauty that my country beheld. The lush green trees, the fresh air, and the breathtaking mountain views made me envy the Mayas who once stood where I was. After a few intakes of breath, I strapped my backpack once again, grabbed my rifle and moved on as I reviewed my mission: patrol the jungles, arrest anyone breaking our laws and use force if necessary. About 15km away from the archeological site, I crossed other Belize Defense Force (BDF) soldiers, and I became fully alert as I entered the area that was sometimes filled with Guatemalans who illegally crossed our borders to exploit our natural resources. Lately there had been more and more encounters,…
