Long ago, people believed that the Earth was the center of the universe, and that all the stars, planets, and other celestial bodies orbited around it. However, as pivotal discoveries were made and new theories emerged, society gained a much more insightful understanding of the cosmos above. In the second century, an astronomer by the name of Claudius Ptolemy proposed his geocentric model of the solar system, which depicted Earth in the center of the universe and the planets and the Sun orbiting in concentric circles around it. There were problems with this model, however, and years later an astronomer named Nicolaus Copernicus proposed another model which showed the Sun at the center.…

Lunar 8 was a lunar probe part of the lunar program as you know it was launched on December 3, 1965 with the objective of achieving a soft landing on the Moon but it really wasn’t soft at all. Actually the retrorocket was launched too late and suffered a hard impact on the lunar surface on the “Oceanus Procellarum” (Ocean of storms) the spacecraft spun , losing altitude control and preventing the hard impact. The mission only lasted for only three days not so long , but the mission did complete the experimental testing of its stellar-guidance system.…

Ganymede, the largest Galilean moon, is the ninth largest object in the Solar System, after the Sun and seven of the planets, due to the fact that Ganymede is larger than Mercury. All other moons that orbit Jovian planets are less than 250 km in diameter, however, most of them are barely larger than 5 km, while the orbital shapes range from nearly perfect circles to highly eccentric, and many revolve in retrograde motion, the direction opposite to Jupiter's spin. The times it takes them to rotate around Jupiter can range from seven hours, to almost three Earth years. Chinese astronomer Gan De was accredited with the first “claimed” observation of one of Jupiter's moons, around 364 BC. However, Galileo Galilei has the first confirmed observations of Jupiter's satellites in 1609 and by March 1610, he had sighted the four Galilean moons with his telescope.…

Mercury is a rocky planet and is the closest celestial body to the sun in our solar system. The planet is covered in many craters, boulders and pulverized dust. The planet lacks an atmosphere to help dictate temperature changes throughout a day, so the planet can experience many temperature swings multiple times per day. After a number of observations, it has been inferred that the planet has been geologically inactive for billions of years.…
