Introduction: Generalist Social Work Practice
Social work practice today is not limited to any particular area or dimension. Social workers deal with a variety of matters at a variety of levels. Social workers are found addressing problems and issues and facilitating solutions of all types and sizes in every part of the world. They can be committed to one cause or a range of causes.

First, the definition should focus on the importance of multiple-level interventions (including those with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities). Intervention is the use of “thoughtful and planned efforts to bring about a specific change” (Sheafor & Horejsi, 2006, p. 119). Second, the definition of generalist practice should involve a knowledge base carefully chosen from a range of theories. Third, it should maintain a focus “both on private issues and social justice concerns” (Landon, 1995, p. 1103). Generalist social workers, then, must have infinite flexibility, a solid knowledge base about many things, and a wide range of skills at their disposal.” (Kirst-Ashman & Hull Jr., 2009, p. 4)
Generalist Practice & Student Social Workers
As a student social worker, generalist practice is an ideal start as it provides a broad knowledge base. To discuss its application in the field, the agency in context is Bharatiya Mahila Federation.
Bharatiya Mahila Federation (referred to as BMF) is a voluntary women’s organization that works for equality and social justice. The organization operates in Kalyan, Bhiwadi and Thane. Advocacy is used to influences existing regulations/norms/policies within a larger economic, social or political sphere.
Most frequently, this intervention is used when the system is not responding to the particular needs of a particular section of people. (Kirst-Ashman & Hull Jr., 2009)
At the macro level, BMF has been involved with the advocacy movement for domestic workers to receive certain legal protection from the government. This has been carried out through discourse with the concerned authorities as also by being part of the rallying efforts or activism conducted for this purpose.
The tool utilized by the student has been that of listening to the domestic workers and the BMF staff about the advocacy method (activism) they applied that culminated in the passing of the act that now entitles them to registration under the labour office along with certain medical benefits and limited pension, which is a start for their movement.
