1. Outline the facts that surround the kidnapping and murdering of Aldo Moro?

In early March 1978, the the former Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro proposed a parliament consisting of the Christian Democrats and the Socialist Party with the support of the Italian Communist Party. It was an attempt to integrate the rising socialists into the government system and was called the “Historic Compromise”. It was opposed by the USA and Russia and some internal groups in Italy for differing reasons.

On March 16, 1978, Aldo Moro was kidnapped by a left-wing extremist group, called the Red Brigades.

The right-wing terrorist group, the Red Brigades, whose main aim was to force Italy to leave the NATO alliance, was also opposed to the “Historic Compromise”. The Italian press reported that Moro might have taken bribes during his time involved in dealing with international disputes. The accusation was aimed at politically destroying him and his push to form a “Historic Compromise” cabinet.

2. What evidence is there of a conspiracy between various groups inside and outside of Italy to prevent the Historic Compromise and remove Aldo Moro as a political threat? The main evidence centres on a documentary “The Last Days of Aldo Moro in which a former member of the US State Department is alleged to have said, “We had to sacrifice Aldo Moro to maintain the stability of Italy”. (Refer Emmanuel Amara, Les derniers jours d’Aldo Moro (The Last Days of Aldo Moro), Interview of Steve Pieczenik put on-line by Rue 89). It is alleged that they had to use the Red Brigades when Moro started to reveal state secrets through his letters.

Deception and misinformation play an important role during Thucydides’ account of the Sicilian Expedition. In reality, the whole expedition which leads to deception and destruction, could have been avoided if the Athenian Assembly had listened to Nicias’s plea. Sicily was indeed too far away to be subdued permanently, and the current state of Athens was more important. Many other Greek city states were looking for their opportunity to attack Athens, and this event would only weaken the empire further. To become the strongest Polis, these individual states and people began their attempts to mislead and deceive one another in order to .…

“To what Extent was the Franco Regime Fascist?” Francisco Franco Ruled as the Head of Spain from 1936 through the victory from the Spanish Civil War. Many argue Franco was a fascist leader due to his oppressing and powerful rule in Spain after the Spanish Civil War. Account for Spain’s neutrality in the Second World War? One could argue that no word has a set definition and can be translated in many different ways. With this in mind one can differentiate between a ‘traditional’ and personal interpretation of a word. As for me personally, the term ‘neutral’ in terms of countries and conflicts signifies a non participant in fighting occurring outside of their jurisdiction. Taking this into consideration we can firmly determine that Spain, under the rule of Franco, was not a neutral country.…

For all the vividity of my imagination, I cannot truly know what it would have been like to fight in the Italian Civil War. A standard history textbook does nothing to further my understanding of what fighting in that terrible war within a war would have been like, for while it is filled with numerical facts and data, it does not speak to the realities of fighting in war. War is a collection of the countless motivations and actions of every soldier, nurse, and civilian involved in the conflict. For that reason, to truly understand what it must have been like to fight in the Italian Resistance, one of the least unified entities fighting in the Second World War, it is vital to read individual accounts of the conflict. Reading a singular account…

Superior Leadership and Greater Unity of Nationalists Beyond the quality of troops and equipment another factor that proved vital in the Spanish Civil War was the leadership, both politically and strategically. Throughout the war the Nationalists were more unified and were politically stronger than the Republicans. In areas like Catalonia there was a social and economic revolution in 1936, lead by Luis Companys, declaring Catalonia independent. The revolution meant, “…Significant land and industry properties were collectivized…” People became enraged at this. In May 1937 Republicans broke out fighting amongst themselves in Barcelona (anti-Stalinist Marxists and Communists).…

The book Nazi Literature in the Americas, written by Robert Bolaño, is a collage of biographies written about fake American authors with far right-wing views. For the most part these biographies are independent of one another with very little connection between them. Bolaño uses these independent stories to show different aspects and qualities of these right-wing actions and beliefs. In this essay we will explore how Bolaño uses these authors to both reveal what he considers to be the nature of right-wing beliefs while also using them to also promote realism within this novel.…

Robert Capa’s the Falling Soldier was taken in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War with a Leica and black and white 35mm film. The image features a man falling over gun in hand on a hill, supposedly capturing the moment of him being hit with a bullet to the head. He flails backwards supposedly because of the impact. The photograph was first published in Vu on the 23rd September 1936, alongside another photograph of man on the floor. It has become one of the most well known war photographs of all time which “plunged viewers into the heart of the battle in way that now seem iconic, even cliched, but at the time were radically new: unsettling, nerve-wracking, scary” (Linfield, 2010, p.190), and gives a sense of reality to war; as Linfield (2010,…

Origins and Causes of Wars • Long-term Causes The Spanish Civil War was a culmination of the internal civil unrest of Spain. Spain was divided by various groups with extreme beliefs from Fascism to “militant anarchism”. These groups provided the basis for societal unrest, as extremists clashed heads in opposing ideals. Poverty was also a striking aspect of the unrest, as poor masses were neglected by the Catholic Church that found identity with “wealthy landowners than with the Spanish People” (Spanish).…
