Case Study Time Out

In general, developing a program is hard work. However, steps are taken to reduce the difficulty, especially when one is looking to develop a time-out program in their own household. The overall goal, in this particular case, is to reduce the likelihood that the child will make nasty comments at his or her parents. In doing so, two different time-out procedures one can apply are exclusionary and observational time-out. The first rule in setting up any time-out procedure is to make sure the child is aware of and understands the behavior that is being targeted, either to reduce or eliminate it altogether. It is also important to inform them about the amount of time they will need to spend in time-out. As a general rule, one minute for each …show more content…
As a grabbed a chair for him to sit in, I started explaining that the comments and words he was using were unacceptable and extremely rude. He was around seven years old at the time, so I explained that seven minutes was the amount of time he was going to spend in time-out. I set a timer in front of him on a small table so he would have a direct view of it the entire time. My goal was to end the nasty comments and behavior, so I explained all the rules of time-out to him again. I also made it perfectly clear that if the behavior persists, he will be placed in time-out again. An exclusionary time-out was used here in which I removed my nephew from the living room, where my other nephews took part in various games, to the small room in my home with nothing but a chair, table, and timer. There was no reinforcement and he was separated from his brothers. Another procedure I could have used was an observational time-out. If this was used, I could have introduced an activity for my nephews that were behaving. As for my eldest nephew, he would have had to be placed in the corner of the room while I explain to him what was wrong with his behavior and the rules involved in time-out. In this instance, a timer would be placed on the small table in my living room so he could have a direct view of it. He also would be forced to watch as the other ones were playing without him. This type of procedure

An immediate intervention that could be used to mitigate Joey’s disruptive behavior is to establish a reward system. Joey’s disruptive behavior is motivated by a need for adult attention that manifests in the form of talking out of turn, loudly and off topic. The antecedents include: interrupting when the teacher gives attention to his classmates, talking louder if he feels he is being ignored, and off topic outbursts when he is disengaged or bored. Since this behavior persists all throughout the day, a reward system that focuses on reducing the frequency of his behavior would be most successful. The potential to spend one-on-one time with the teacher would be a reward that would eliminate the antecedents of this behavior, facilitate his need for adult attention, and have intrinsic value to Joey so that he is motivated to self-monitor his behavior.…

When raising a child, it is ultimately the responsibility of the parents to teach their children right from wrong. There are many different methods of disciplining a child. Some are viewed as more “acceptable” than others. Whether parents chose the more “acceptable” method, such as a time out, or the less “acceptable” method of spanking, both are trying to teach discipline.
